Education & Research: Knowledge creates future

Education is the key to the self-determined and reflective use of Artificial Intelligence. The statworx initiative AI for Good is committed to enhancing the skills in our society for dealing with AI, thereby shaping a sustainable and responsible future. Therefore, we have formulated 7 AI principles that guide our work.

As an initiative, we actively support innovative projects, studies, and applications of Artificial Intelligence in the field of research and development, such as in tumor detection. In the educational sector, we focus on the use of generative AI for creating educational materials and assessing performance. AI-supported automation and standardization can, for instance, reduce the workload of teachers and sustainably optimize the learning experiences of students.

Because we care particularly about education in schools, we support the KI macht Schule initiative, which has been working since 2020 to teach the fundamentals and applications of AI in German-speaking schools and discuss ethical questions. Beyond school education, we are also committed to raising awareness about AI. Through the statworx AI Academy, we offer workshops and training tailored to corporate learning and upskilling. Education in the AI field means more to us than just imparting technical knowledge. It is about creating an understanding of the ethical, social, and economic impacts of this technology.

Artificial Intelligence offers great opportunities to positively influence our entire education system. It can help personalize educational content and improve access to quality education. Adaptive learning systems based on AI can analyze the individual learning progress of students and provide tailored content to optimize the learning process. Furthermore, AI-supported tools can assist teachers in numerous tasks, such as automating administrative tasks and providing valuable insights into the learning progress of their students.

Equality: Making AI accessible to all

Equality is a central concern of the statworx initiative AI for Good. We strive to ensure that access to AI knowledge and technologies is open and fair to all people. As more people use Artificial Intelligence in various areas of life, equality in the context of AI means, on the one hand, that all people, regardless of gender, origin, or social status, have the opportunity to benefit from the advantages of this technology. Our initiative promotes participation through targeted programs and partnerships that make it easier for disadvantaged groups to access education and technology. This includes, among others, Girls' Day and the Women in AI & Robotics initiative.

However, mere access to this technology does not mean that AI is automatically fairer or less biased. Hence, equality also concerns the algorithms that assist in decisions about credit approval, crime prediction, or personnel selection. These are based on large datasets that can often contain biases. These unconscious biases can have serious implications for individuals and society. Therefore, it is crucial to be aware of potential risks and use AI responsibly.

We are convinced: AI can help reduce existing inequalities. However, this requires dealing with the biases of systems and people. Therefore, we are involved in questions such as under what conditions AI should be used in the workplace. For example, AI systems can ensure discrimination-free hiring processes or overcome barriers for people with disabilities. The issue of bias in AI plays an important role here.

Sustainability & Responsible Consumption: Sustainability through innovation

The greatest challenges of our time lie in preserving our environment and conserving our planet's resources. With the statworx initiative AI for Good, we support the development of sustainable AI solutions that serve environmental protection and promote responsible consumption.

Sustainability and responsible consumption mean using our resources in a way that meets the needs of current generations without compromising the ability of future generations to meet theirs. Our initiative supports projects aimed at reducing the ecological footprint and promoting sustainable practices. This includes AI-supported systems for monitoring and optimizing energy consumption, waste management, and resource efficiency. Our Quick Guide: Cost, Resource, & Energy Savings for Sustainable AI Development offers an overview of how to develop AI sustainably—e.g., by reducing the energy demand of deep learning models and using tools to monitor environmental impacts.

AI can play a crucial role in combating climate change. By analyzing environmental data, AI models can make precise predictions about weather and climate patterns, contributing to better planning and adaptation to climate changes. AI systems can also be used in agriculture to optimize the use of water, fertilizers, and pesticides, leading to more sustainable production. Our Use Case Collection: Green AI provides an overview of this.
